今天練習托福口說，練到一題：
Which of the following qualities do you think is most important for a university student to be successful?
●Highly motivated
●Hard working
●Intelligent
Choose one of these qualities and explain why it is important.
我選了highly motivated。
其中有一個關鍵是，這個問題沒有定義什麼叫做” success”。如果定義成績好等於 success，當然是hard working的contribution比較大。但如果放大到一輩子的時間來看，highly motivated的學生即使出了社會、進了完全無關的產業、生活忙碌，都還會持續學習。如果success的定義是賺錢或功成名就，那麼關鍵是要找到捷徑、用對方法，其實跟以上三個選項都還不一定有關係。
以前我總是覺得，學習興趣是自然產生的，而且只有可能是自然產生的。例如說，從小接觸各種科目，發現某一科特別擅長或是特別好玩，所以學習興趣就自然產生。這當然是很理想的狀態。
但現在慢慢發現，常常學習興趣是自找的、現實考量的。例如，IC design在臺灣賺比較多錢，所以在學生時代就對IC design的課程產生興趣。這種人為製造的學習興趣，比起自然產生的，當然就少了一點命中注定的美感。
然而，這些人為製造的興趣是否有比較庸俗呢？
那我們就要回過頭來想，人類為什麼要學習。個人不專業的私以為，學習是為了訓練思考方式，以滿足人的兩種需要：
(1) 現實需要：熟悉知識、技術、工具，以解決現實生活中遇到的種種難題
(2) 情感需要：成就感、趣味性，提升美感經驗的質與量，以增進心靈的富足
不管你學的是數學、工程還是藝術，只要你學的東西可以幫你持續地兼顧現實和情感的需要，就可以長期保有學習動機。
如果有一個化學老師長期保有對教學和知識的熱忱，而且急切的希望讓學生都體會到化學之美，那就表示「化學」這門知識不但讓這個老師有一份賴以維生的decent job，還帶給這個老師美感和使命感，同時滿足了他的現實需要和情感需要。
我們常常聽到有人放棄夢想、屈就現實，也常常聽到有人放棄現實、追逐理想。講起來當然會覺得「追夢者」比起「安於現實者」更為激勵人心。然而細究背後原委，常常可以發現，「追夢者」比起「安於現實者」有更好的現實基礎，例如：富足的家庭背景、一份穩當的工作和充足的空閒時間。即使以上都沒有，通常也都具備特別優異、足以撐起一個人自信的天生條件。
所以年紀稍長以後，如果看到有人做出過於「功利」而不符合美感的行為，我比較不敢以一種高高在上的姿態評論他們。無論他們是否真的匱乏，至少他們自覺如此，旁人又有資格說什麼呢。再說，你以為人家功利，搞不好背地裡人家還笑你迂腐呢。
回到主題，為什麼我選highly motivated作為一個成功學生的要素。因為學習該項知識可以滿足該學生的情感需求，那麼他會比較願意降低一點現實上的因素(例如：想賺更多錢、想把時間拿去做其他事情)，來持續這項學習，即使遇到阻礙，熱情也能消磨得慢一些。
講到這個，就會覺得能夠「自我激勵」是挺重要的因素，無論是對學習還是人生的其他面向，人就是需要被激勵(或是被負面事件刺激)來保持方向感。我們寧可屏蔽掉某些會影響前進決心的資訊(即使是正確的資訊)，也要維持一種方向感。因為沒有方向感的人生，坐困愁城，比起方向太多的人生更加可怕。
人生重要的是過程不是結果。即使是繞一圈回到原點，也不等於沒有作功。所以偶爾騙騙自己也好，選一個方向，勇敢前進吧。

The reason is that a new hospital has been opened recently in the local
community. Because the new hospital is very close to the campus and most
students can have convenient access to it, and also because the new hospital
comes with a lot of first class medical equipment, which the student health
center lacks, the student health center’s existence is not justified any more.
Also, the money saved by canceling the student health center will be used to
amplify the library storage
